Sarah Reed Receives Broaddus Hospital Scholarship
PHILIPPI, W.VA. – A Philip Barbour High School Senior is receiving some help with pursuing her career goal in radiation oncology. Sarah D. Reed, daughter of Anthony and Stephanie Reed of Moatsville, was awarded the Broaddus Hospital Scholarship for $1,200 through the Barbour County Community Foundation.
Broaddus Hospital CEO Dana Gould offered congratulations to Sarah for her career and her scholarship award.
“Broaddus Hospital is proud to partner with Barbour County Community Foundation in offering the Scholarship Fund,” Gould said. “We extend this year’s recipient, Sarah Reed, best wishes in the future at West Virginia University Medicine’s Radiography Program. We are pleased to be able to help Barbour County residents who are pursuing careers in healthcare professions.”
Sarah is the granddaughter of Twila and Doward Matlick of Moatsville, and Gary and Judy Marsh of Moatsville. She said she was very excited to learn of her scholarship award.
“I was ecstatic to hear that I was the winner,” Sarah said. “It will be used to help me achieve my goals in college and like many college students, take some of the financial stress away.”
In her application, Sarah wrote she plans to attend West Virginia University Medicine’s Radiography program at Ruby Memorial Hospital in late June. She said that is her first career step and said she plans to possibly become a Radiation Oncologist following completion of the Radiography program. Sarah said she feels college is an important factor in people’s lives and college will help her obtain a stable job and allow her to gain more independence.
The Broaddus Hospital Scholarship Fund was created to help address the healthcare needs of Barbour County, and to further the educational opportunities of qualified individuals seeking careers in a healthcare field. The fund is limited to current residents of Barbour County or those employed by Broaddus Hospital for more than one year and their dependents. Recipients must be pursuing a degree or certification in a health care related field who are attending an accredited college, university or institution. Those applying for the scholarship are asked to submit a written application and may be asked for a personal interview.
During her time at Philip Barbour High School, Sarah participated in many activities serving as Captain of the Philip Barbour Girls Soccer team, membership in the National Honor Society, Honors Society and the National Society of High School Scholars. She was the 3rd Place winner in the Young Writers Contest and helped with the New Beginnings Community Dinner.
Sarah graduated from PBHS Summa Cum Laude with a GPA of 4.09259. She attends Faith Way Baptist Church and in her spare time, she enjoys writing short stories, one of which was recently published.#
