DMC Earns Mammography Distinction

October 12, 2018

Elkins — Davis Medical Center is pleased to announce renewal of a continued three-year accreditation in mammography by the American College of Radiology (ACR).  The ACR gold seal represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety, and is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Parameters and Technical Standards.

“October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month so it is especially meaningful to share this great news now,” said Debra Dean, MS, R.T. (R), (N), (M) and Director of DMC Radiology Services.  “Mammograms aid in the early detection and diagnosis of breast disease and cancer.  Patients can feel confident knowing that Davis Medical Center upholds the nation’s highest standards of care for mammography services.”

Davis Medical Center provides digital mammography which offers distinct advantages in the early detection of breast cancer.  Mammography services are provided weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Weekend and extended hour appointments are also available for patient convenience.  Physician referrals are required for this screening.

“Each of our clinicians is a registered mammography technologist which means they have completed additional training and have advanced skills in breast imaging,” said Dean.  “Like the ACR Accreditation, this illustrates our commitment to providing the best care possible.”

Through the Accountable Care Act mammograms are covered as a preventive screening by most insurance companies.  The Davis Health System Foundation funds a free mammogram program for qualified participants.  More information about this program can be found on the DHS Foundation website.

The ACR gold seal of accreditation is a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report that can be used for continuous practice improvement.

Dean added that patients scheduled for a mammogram on October 19th, National Mammography Day, will receive a special gift.  The staff will also participate in Women’s Health Day on October 27th at DMC by sharing education on breast self-examinations and mammography.
