Davis Medical Center Restricts Visitation Based on COVID Uptick

May 24, 2021

Elkins, WV -- Due to an uptick in the number of COVID positive patients, Davis Medical Center is restricting visitation to all inpatient and observation units.

Currently, DMC has a COVID positive rate of 29%.  Visitation restriction will be enforced until the percentage drops below 10%.

“We had been lucky to return to pre-COVID surge visitation guidelines until today.  For the safety of patients and staff, we’ll enforce stricter rules to mitigate spread of the virus,” said Dr. Catherine “Mindy” Chua, DO, FAAFP, FMNM, CPE , Davis Health System Chief Medical Officer.

The units affected include the Intensive Care Unit, North II, and the Clinical Decision Unit.  Outpatient units will allow one visitor only to accompany patients for provider visits or diagnostic testing.  Everyone entering the facility will be pre-screened and must be masked.

Visitation for extenuating circumstances such as the birth of a child, or end of life will be allowed under specific guidelines.

Hospital representatives say the increase in COVID positive patients is likely due to a reduction in community mask usage, lessened mask restrictions and graduation celebrations.  They also worry that the upcoming Memorial Day weekend could result in more local COVID positive cases.

“There are vaccinations available to anyone who would like to be protected against COVID,” added Chua.  “Those who are hospitalized were not vaccinated.”

Davis Medical Center, The Elkins-Randolph Health Department, Valley HealthCare, and a number of retail pharmacies are offering COVID vaccines free of charge.  Free community screenings will be available at the Alternative Screening Unit "Drive-Thru Clinic" on the campus of Davis Medical Center May 25 through May 27, from 10 AM to 2 PM.

Until this wave passes, Davis Medical Center will monitor the daily rate of COVID positive inpatient cases to determine the level of visitation allowed.  When the rate is below 10%, pre-surge visitation guidelines will apply.  Visitation will be restricted when the inpatient rate is above 10%.  The DHS website,, will be updated daily to reflect visitation rules in place.
