DMH Ranks In Top 5% Nationally for Patient Safety
ELKINS -- Davis Memorial Hospital has been named a recipient of the 2007 Distinguished Hospital Award for Patient SafetyTM in an independent national research study, according to HealthGrades, the nation’s leading healthcare ratings company.
HealthGrades provided the following information about the distinction:
- The award reflects DMH’s performance among the top five percent nationally for patient safety outcomes.
- DMH is one of only 242 hospitals out of nearly 5,000 in the nation to receive this honor.
- Patients who are cared for at a Distinguished Hospital for Patient Safety are 40% less likely to experience an adverse, preventable event during their stay than patients who are treated at a lower-performing hospital.
In its Fourth Annual Patient Safety in American Hospitals Study, HealthGrades independently analyzed nearly 40 million Medicare patient records from federal fiscal years 2003 to 2005 using 13 patient safety indicators developed by the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The HealthGrades study compares the rates of key patient safety events using AHRQ’s methodology, which includes the following patient safety indicators:
- Low mortality in Diagnostic Related Groupings (DRGs)
- Decubitus ulcer
- Post-operative respiratory failure
- Failure to rescue
- Foreign body left in during procedure
- Post-operative sepsia
- Limited infections due to medical care
- Iatrogenic pneumothorax
- Post-operative hip fracture
- Post-operative hemorrhage or hemotoma
- Post-operative physiologic and metabolic derangements
- Post-operative pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis
- Post-operative abdominal wound dehiscence
“This award results from an objective study that looks at specific criteria in measuring how patients fare at hospitals across the nation,” DHS Chief Executive Officer Mark Doak said. “Receiving the Distinguished Hospital Award for Patient Safety is an extraordinary accomplishment by our employees and medical staff.”
HealthGrades officials will be at DMH on April 12 to present a trophy and participate in a celebration that will be held in the DMH cafeteria overflow area from 2 until 4 p.m. “We have much to celebrate,” Doak said. “Patient safety is our greatest concern, and because of the efforts of our employees and medical staff, we are succeeding.”
